GENERAL EXAM INFORMATION

All the sessions require pre-registration five (5) days prior to the test session.

  • Please bring two (2) forms of identification, one of which should be a photo ID - drivers licenses are quite satisfactory. Parents should provide some form of identification for non-driving minors. Other forms of acceptable ID include passports, picture library cards, etc. (see below)

  • Bring both originals AND photocopies of any current FCC Amateur License and any unexpired original certificates (CSCE's) AND a photocopy showing credit from a previous exam that you need to have counted toward a possible new license or upgrade.

  • Calculators are allowed, but you must be able to show the examiner team that the memories of any programmable calculators have been cleared before the exam starts.

  • All needed forms will be supplied by the exam teams - including NVEC form 605.  You should, however, bring two No. 2 Pencils with erasers and scratch paper.

  • An examination fee will be charged at each session. This fee for 2009 is $15.00 and should be in exact cash (no personal checks, please).  If you fail an element and retake it at that same session there is an additional $15.00 fee.

  • You should arrive at the exam site at least 15 minutes before the exam is scheduled to start to begin paperwork processing. No one will be admitted once the testing is in session.

 If you are upgrading, the VEC cannot process your application without an FRN number, so if you don't know your FRN number, a quick way to check is to view your license info on http://www.qrz.com/.  Just enter your callsign and click 'detail info'.  If you have a FRN number, it will be displayed.  If you do not see that you have a FRN number assigned to you, you must register with the FCC  web site at http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/ to obtain your new FRN number.

If you don't currently have a license and are are applying for the first time, then you will need your social security number in place of an FRN number.

Valid IDs

When no photo ID is available, the candidate must present any two of the following items:

  • Non-photo ID/driver's license (some states still have them);

  • Social Security Card (as FCC now requires each applicant to supply a taxpayer ID number)

  • Birth certificate (must have the appropriate seal);

  • Minor's work permit or school report card;

  • Utility bill, bank statement or other business correspondence that specifically names the person; or

  • Postmarked envelope addressed to the person at his or her current mailing address as it appears on the Form 605.

If the applicant is a minor without a drivers license or other photo ID even a video game magazine or other magazine addressed to that child will serve as one of the two required IDs.  Even a school year book can provide photo proof of the child being tested, and school report cards can be used. Anything else of a similar nature that demonstrates child's identity and residence.  By being accompanied by his or her parent does not satisfy the rule.
